With soups or pasta, garlic bread never goes astray. Just combine butter with crushed garlic and salt, butter the bread and heat in foil in 350 F oven for 10 or 15 minutes. Great next morning for breakfast too (Peter and Jane).
About a whole knob of garlic
Around 2 oz butter or margarine
1 teaspoons of salt or to taste
Parsley and/or dried herbs
Loaf of bread of French stick
A. Instead of sticking the slices of bread together, try slitting a French loaf length-ways and bake the garlic bread open-top. You could grate some cheese over the tops.
B. Adding anchovies is another popular variation to standard garlic bread. And some people add 1 or two chopped chipotle chilies and a little of the adobo sauce.
C. A fast, simple method Wally Szafranowycz used is to cook bread slices into toast then butter them. Let them cool. Then turn the toast pieces upside down and scrape garlic cloves all over the rough botton and around the sides.
